Reef Scenic Flights from Cairns

From a boat you see one reef at a time. From the air you see how the whole thing fits together: sand cays, lagoons, the pale edges of reef flats and the dark channels between them, stretching away towards the open sea. A scenic flight from Cairns takes 30 to 40 minutes, needs no swimming at all, and is the one way to get a sense of the reef’s size, which runs about 2,300 km with more than 2,900 individual reefs.

The Outer Edges of the Great Barrier Reef scenic flight (our breakdown) is the most-reviewed flight from Cairns and rated 4.9 by 3,562 guests, higher than any other Cairns departure on this site with more than 100 reviews. It starts at $140 for the 30-minute Highlights flight, with a 40-minute Signature flight as the longer option. Everyone gets a window seat and a headset for the pilot’s commentary, and within ten minutes of take-off you are over Green Island, then Oyster Reef, Vlasoff Cay, Upolu Reef, Pixie Reef and Arlington Reef, with up to 140 km of the outer reef in view.

There is a weight limit of 100 kg per passenger on the 30-minute flight and 115 kg on the 40-minute one, and you need to step into the plane unaided. If the weather cancels your flight, you can reschedule or take a full refund.

Other planes and helicopters

The GSL Aviation 40-minute flight (our breakdown) leaves from Cairns Airport in a high-wing plane, so the wing sits above the windows, and window seats are guaranteed. The route takes in Arlington, Upolu, Michaelmas and Oyster reefs, then Double Island and Palm Cove on the way back. It is $203 and rated 4.8 by 565 guests.

Helicopters cost more than the planes. The Nautilus 30-minute helicopter flight (our breakdown) leaves from Marina Point on Pier Point Road and covers Green Island, Arlington Reef, Vlasoff and Upolu sand cays, with the fuel surcharge built into the $342 fare. It has 38 reviews so far at 4.6, and it needs a minimum number of passengers to fly. Nautilus also runs a 45-minute reef and rainforest flight ($474) that turns inland over Barron Falls and Kuranda.

Flight and reef in one day

If you want to snorkel too, several reef days build the flight in. The Down Under cruise with a helicopter flight (our breakdown) takes off for 10 minutes from the boat’s second reef site at Hastings Reef, from $309, rated 4.6 by 1,171 guests. The Reef Adventures snorkel and fly day ($287) pairs a fast-boat snorkel with a 40-minute flight, seven guests per plane. GSL and Pure Snorkelling sell a flight plus afternoon half-day snorkel ($329), and the Sunlover pontoon day offers a 10-minute helicopter upgrade.

Before you fly

Humpback whales pass the coast in the cooler months, and the operators give July to August or July to September for sightings from the air; they also report manta rays, turtles and dugongs, though none are promised. Heart Reef is in the Whitsundays near Airlie Beach, not off Cairns, so none of these flights passes over it. If you are diving on the same trip, leave 12 to 24 hours between your last dive and the flight. Clear, calm days give the best colour, and the dry season from roughly May to October usually has more of them.
