Snorkelling Tours from Cairns

Snorkelling is the reason most people board a boat in Cairns. The outer reef sites sit roughly an hour and a half out by fast catamaran, and once the boat ties up you step off the back into water that is around 24°C in winter and 29°C in summer. Every trip on this page includes the mask, snorkel and fins. What separates them is the size of the boat, how much time you get in the water, and whether someone swims alongside to show you where to look.

Small boats with a guide in the water

Our top pick is the small-group snorkelling tour from Reef Adventures (our breakdown), from $182 and rated 4.8 by 363 guests. You check in at the company’s office on Finger B of Marlin Marina, board a fast boat, and snorkel two locations the skipper picks on the day, with a snorkel guide, flotation and a stinger suit in season. Lunch and snacks are included, and so are GoPro photos of your time in the water. Drinks, wetsuits and prescription masks cost extra, and there is no hotel pickup. The day runs about seven hours.

Read the suitability list before you book. The listing rules out non-swimmers, children under six, people over 65 and anyone prone to motion sickness, which is stricter than most boats here.

The Reef Daytripper small-group tour is the lower-priced alternative at $160, rated 4.7 by 64 guests. It sails to Upolu Reef on the outer edge, snorkels two spots there, and serves lunch with tea and coffee. The trip out takes longer under sail, and snorkellers aged 65 and over wear a snorkel vest.

The big catamarans

If you would rather have space to spread out between swims, the larger boats carry a full crew and a proper lunch. The Passions of Paradise premium catamaran (our breakdown) is the most-reviewed reef cruise from Cairns, rated 4.8 by 3,877 guests from $193. The crew choose two outer reef sites each day from a list that includes Flynn, Milln, Norman and Hastings reefs, and a guided snorkel tour, prescription masks and a marine talk come with the fare. Hotel transfers are extra.

The Ocean Freedom reef and coral cay cruise (our breakdown) spends about six hours at Upolu Reef across two stops, one on the Wonder Wall and one at the coral cay. A guided drift snorkel and a glass-bottom boat ride are included. It costs $203 and is rated 4.8 by 1,626 guests. For three stops in a day, the Silverswift three-site trip (our breakdown) runs a guided snorkel at its third site, from $216.

Snorkelling from a coral cay

The Michaelmas Cay sailing day (our breakdown) works differently. A 32-metre sailing catamaran spends four hours at the cay, and a small beach boat ferries you ashore to snorkel straight off the sand in shallow water. Michaelmas Cay is a seabird nesting site, so visitors stay on the roped beach area, which is open from 9:30am to 3pm. A 30-minute semi-submersible ride, a buffet lunch with prawns and a glass of sparkling wine on the sail home are included. It costs $202 and has 158 reviews at 4.7.

Before you get in

Stinger season runs roughly November to May. The risk out on the reef is low, but crews hand out Lycra suits and ask you to wear them, and our top pick includes one in season. Every boat also collects the reef charge, AUD 8.50 per person for a full day, either in the fare or on board. Coral cover in the northern reef region, which takes in Cairns, rose to 35.1% in the latest survey, the start of a recovery from the 2024 bleaching, though sites vary and nobody can promise what a given reef looks like on the day. Turtles, reef sharks and giant clams are common sightings, never certain ones.
