Outer reef or inner reef: the choice that matters most
The islands close to Cairns sit on the inner reef. Green Island is about 27 km out and Fitzroy Island about 29 km, each roughly 45 minutes by fast catamaran. The outer reef is more like 1.5 to 2 hours away. Our guide to how far the reef is from Cairns works through the times boat by boat.
That extra hour on the water is what most people are paying for: the outer reef moorings the full-day boats use, such as Moore, Saxon, Hastings and Upolu reefs, far from the mainland. It is where the giant clams and Maori wrasse in everyone’s photos usually live, though conditions shift from site to site and day to day. Island trips trade some of that for a beach, a rainforest walk and shore snorkelling where you can stand up when you need a rest.
If you have one day and you can swim, the outer reef is the usual answer. If you are travelling with small children or someone nervous in the water, an island or a pontoon will likely make for a happier day.

A first visit, and you want the classic day
Book the Great Barrier Reef Cruise by Premium Catamaran at $193. It is the most-reviewed reef cruise on this site, 4.8 from 3,877 guests. You get two outer reef sites chosen on the day, a guided snorkel tour, flotation belts, prescription masks, lunch and a marine talk. The most water time for the money
The Premium Reef Snorkel, Dive and Culture Day is the lowest-priced full outer reef day on this site at $174, with five hours of water time across two sites and guides who share the stories of the region’s Traditional Owners. The Half-Day Snorkelling Tour at $126 is the lowest fare for a half day on the outer reef on this site: four hours, a maximum of 27 guests and three departures a day. Book a pontoon. The Outer Great Barrier Reef Pontoon Day at $200 moors at Moore Reef with an underwater observatory, a semi-submersible, a glass-bottom boat and a waterslide. You dive, or want to
Divers should look at the Premium Snorkelling and Diving Day Trip (our breakdown) at $179, on a boat built for diving with up to five hours at the reef, and our diving page. Before you book
Check the pickup line. Several of the best-reviewed boats, including the catamaran cruise, the culture day and the pontoon days, exclude hotel transfers. The Silverswift offers coach transfers at extra cost, and the coral cay cruise sells pickup as an add-on booked 48 hours ahead with the operator. Almost every boat leaves from the Reef Fleet Terminal or the Marlin Marina fingers beside it,.
Budget for the reef charge. The Environmental Management Charge is AUD 8.50 per person for a full day from 1 April 2026. Some listings fold it into the fare and others collect it on board.
Read the suitability list. Snorkel-only boats such as the half-day and small-group tours say plainly that they do not suit non-swimmers, over-65s or people prone to seasickness. Pontoons and the bigger catamarans are more forgiving.

What every reef trip here shares
Every outer reef boat hands out a snorkel, mask and fins, and nearly all of them supply a Lycra suit. Turtles, reef sharks and giant clams turn up often, and no operator can promise any of them.
